"This publication coincides with the exhibition, Markéta Luskačová, at Stills, Edinburgh in 2023. We are delighted to be hosting the first solo presentation of Luskačová’s work in Scotland and bringing it to the attention of our audiences. The exhibition has been developed in partnership with the Centre for British Photography, London where it will be presented in 2024. Over the last couple of years, it has been nothing less than a privilege to work closely with Markéta Luskačová on the selection and presentation of her photographs and to listen to her insights and observations about pictures dating back to the mid-1960s. Having to choose a finite number of pictures for our gallery walls, from the wealth of available material, has been the most daunting challenge. The theme of children and childhood permeates almost all of Luskačová’s work and so this has allowed us to run a thread through many of her best-known series made around the UK and in Ireland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The selected works seem to encompass all the moods and colours of childhood. Luskačová depicts children with great respect, empathy and wonder and the pictures illustrate a mutual feeling and understanding from her subjects. These are not pictures of soon-to-be-adults but of people in their own right. They are imaginative, creative, playful, kind, strong, resourceful and curious as well as serious, cruel, thoughtful, scared and mischievous.
