Marvin Newman’s Early Black & White is the latest title in our series of large, high-end monographs. The first release will be in our booth at this year’s Paris Photo. In an edition of 333 limited, numbered and signed copies, the linen hardcover will be available in two different colors.

On 120 pages, with 93 predominantly full-page reproductions, the book will provide an extensive overview of Marvin Newman’s early black & white images between 1949 and 1956. Our book will be the first comprehensive monograph on Newman’s work apart from the volume from Taschen publishing, which is limited to his color work only. The now 92-year-old artist studied at the Art Institute in Chicago with his colleagues Kenneth Josephson, Ray K. Metzker and Joseph Sterling under teachers such as Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. His multifaceted oeuvre, predominantly from the big cities of Chicago and New York, stands out for the perfect use of light in his several night-time scenes. He demonstrates a special affinity for the children and teenagers that he came upon during his regular wandering on the streets.
