In works such as Dead Red and Breathing Space, the artists' own bodies have become material for artistic practice and are subjected to a whole array of formal, visual and acoustic experimentations that mine the experience of communication. However, that experience remains carefully impersonal in their work. The actions and interactions are staged, yet real; the body is often reduced in its framing to a fragment - a torso, a head or the area of the mouth. Gender is frequently unclear and thus cannot be attributed beyond very broad lines such as youthfulness and skin colour. Though fragmented and isolated, the body is intensely present and resolutely engaged in the primordial and impossible activity of communication - its pulses, pleasures and transgressions.
