Publisher's description
In 1969, Architectural Review invited Tim Rock to guest edit a series of articles about the state of Britain at the end of the decade. The series, Manplan, focused on people, not buildings, and on the effects of the built environment on society. Manplan’s humanist manifesto covered education, health, transport, housing, the economy and leisure.
Manplan made a strong case for looking at planning and architecture in a more holistic way that put society first. Patrick Ward was fortunate to be awarded the assignment for the first issue. His brief, titled Frustration, was to travel the UK photographing the ‘breaking points’ of society - transport, industrial strife, inadequate housing, and failing and dilapidated infrastructure largely unchanged since the nineteenth century.
Ward’s remarkable photographs still resonate today and are a stark reminder of why it is so important to invest in society and the built environment.
