Publisher's description
Photographer Frederik Buyckx (born 1984) explores remote areas in his work where nature can be overwhelmingly beautiful and unpredictably harsh. He always explores the ultimate limits of the elements.
Meetings with special people are often the reason for a photo series. In his award-winning series Horse Head, he documents - even on horseback - in an inimitable way the isolated lifestyle of semi-nomadic herders in Kyrgyzstan.
With an essay by photographer and writer Lottie Davies.
Frederik Buyckx is the winner of the Sony Photographer of the Year and Limaphoto and laureate of the ZEISS Photography Award and the World Press Photo Awards.
The Horse Head exhibition takes place in the exhibition halls of CC Mechelen from October 12, 2019 to January 5, 2020.
“For this intense project, Frederik Buyckx built a quiet bond with the shepherd community in Kyrgyzstan, who took him on its wanderings. In Frederik's photos, you can almost feel the wind cutting through your skin as you ride through the snowy landscape on a horse. You can feel in everything that he is not only there to photograph but also really empathizes. ”
- Magnum photographer Bieke Depoorter
“Buyckx's work returns to the essence of looking at photography. A landscape is often overlooked but is central to our existence. ”
- Zelda Cheatle, Sony World Photography Awards jury member
