Irish Work by Tom Wood is a highly personal book of unseen photographs taken over a period of over nearly 50 years. The book contains over 200 previously unpublished images centring on Wood’s lifelong relationship with Ireland - a personal story and conflict, linked to the wider history of the country.
Irish Work is available in a first edition of 1500 copies, including a Special Edition of 150 copies. The Special Edition a signed and numbered copy of the book, wrapped in a dustjacket designed by Padraig Timoney (Photie Man) and is accompanied by two signed and limited hand-prints in a printed double photo mount. The special edition is delivered in a printed presentation box.
Taken between 1972 and 2019, the photographs are neither chronological nor follow a defined narrative—instead they presented as a stream of consciousness. The book shifts stylistically from portrait to panorama, video to colour and black & white, and in subject matter from landscape to interior, lone figures to social gatherings. Some of the photographs show hallmarks of Wood’s best-known work, warm portraits taken in urban Liverpool and the surrounding area, but many others present a departure from, and revision of, his familiar style.
The book is a collaboration with artist Padraig Timoney, who worked on the sequencing and dustcover design. Wood and Timoney share an understanding that came about through both shared visual concerns and shared experience.
